Jane: An Interview and Overview with Kate Kirtz (Maxine #2, “The Ambition Issue,” 1996)

An interview with filmmaker Kate Kirtz, about the making of Jane: An Abortion Service, a 1996 film (with Nell Lundy) about the underground community of Chicago women who came together to facilitate access to safe, free abortions in the years before Roe v. Wade. I think Kate and I were … neighbors? I can’t even remember. But it’s interesting that this interview, for our “ambition” issue, is as much about the process of making a living making art as it is about the story of Jane itself.

Cynthia Plaster Caster (Maxine #5, “The Body Issue,” 1999)

Interview with the late Cynthia Plaster Caster (whom I also wrote about in 2002 and then eulogized in 2022 for the Chicago Reader). This was the first of the many many times CPC and I spoke, and I like looking back to see me stick my foot in it, implying that groupies are “subservient,” and her having absolutely None Of It. She was so shy, but she also took no shit.
