{"id":450,"date":"2009-04-16T15:42:21","date_gmt":"2009-04-16T19:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marthabayne.com\/wordpress\/?p=450"},"modified":"2009-04-16T16:30:24","modified_gmt":"2009-04-16T20:30:24","slug":"shes-no-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marthabayne.com\/wordpress\/shes-no-green\/","title":{"rendered":"She&#8217;s no green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anne-ford.com\/\">Anne Ford<\/a> &#8212; who is, by the way, a great example of a writer-as-polymath and whose work I always enjoy for its thorough, open-minded take on whatever it is that has captured her attention &#8212; has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagoreader.com\/features\/stories\/green09\/nance_klehm\/\">nice piece<\/a> in this week&#8217;s <em>Reader <\/em>on my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/spontaneousvegetation.net\/\">Nance Klehm<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This passage handily sums up why I like her so much:<\/p>\n<p><em>But don\u2019t call her\u00a0<\/em><span class=\"BodyItalic\"><em>green<\/em><\/span><em>. &#8220;Those terms are marketing terms,&#8221; Klehm says. &#8220;They are not helping us connect to a more abundant and self-renewing way of being.&#8221; The question she wants people to ask isn\u2019t &#8220;Which \u2018green\u2019 products should I buy?\u201d It\u2019s \u201cWhat\u2019s the nature of my connection to the soil, and can I deepen it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I would also add that I was on the foraging walk where she found the morels (mentioned a bit further down the piece), and not only did she scream, she jumped up and down shrieking like a little kid and then flung herself into the grass, kicking her feet in the air. I think the last thing to get me that excited was the popsicle man.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been on several of these walks and taken a bunch of her clases, but, frankly, my retention is not so great. I still have trouble identifying lamb&#8217;s quarters from a foot away, and I think I have killed all the worms in my compost bin. What I <em>have<\/em> internalized from Nance&#8217;s work is the belief that it&#8217;s still possible to see the world as source of unending discovery.
